My All Time Favorite Blog Post And Why It's So Great

This is an excerpt from my brand new Amazon best selling book Welcome to the Funnel which is on sale at Amazon right now for only $5.99.

I've been asked a few times lately what I think makes a great blog post, so I thought I would share one of my all time favorites. It's from Fred Wilson's very popular blog AVC: musings of a VC in NYC. Wilson publishes one post per day, almost always on a topic related to venture capital entrepreneurship or the Internet.

This one in particular is absolutely brilliant. It's called Minimum Viable Personality and is a guest post from a giant startup robot dinosaur that goes by FakeGrimlock. In the tech startup world we often refer to the acronym MVP: Minimum Viable Product. It's basically the idea that, instead of trying to create a perfect new product, just get something out there and see if people actually like it then improve on it later. The "Grimster" has a different take on MVP, or Minimum Viable Personality as he calls it. Here he talks about the essential elements to building a successful product.

Here's a quick excerpt of the brilliance of FakeGrimlock's post.

PERSONALITY BETTER THAN MARKETING

WHEN CHOOSE PRODUCT, HUMANS ONLY CARE ABOUT DOES WORK, AND IS INTERESTING.

WORLD ALREADY FULL OF THINGS DO WORK. MOST BORING.

PERSONALITY = INTERESTING. INTERESTING = CARE. CARE = TALK.

EVERYONE CARE AND TALK ABOUT PRODUCT? YOU WIN.

The entire post is a perfect example of how to use text, images and personality to create a very special piece of content. You can read the entire post here, and I highly encourage you to do so.

Why do I love this post so much? Because it includes all of the elements that make up a fantastic piece of content. Including:

  • It’s a guest post which is great for lending a new/ unique voice to a blog.
  • It’s easy to read and contains no fluff. A great blog post has just enough words to make its point and leave you wanting more.
  • It has personality. If you can't figure out how to inject personality into your blog, that's a huge problem.
  • It has fantastic visuals. Great visuals don't have to cost a fortune, they just have to add value. The visuals used here are priceless.
  • It's incredibly useful. This is something that I have printed out on my desk and celebrate daily. It's a constant reminder on how to be relevant and connect with your audience.
  • It’s inspiring, which is the most important element in my opinion. This post makes me want to be better at marketing and to share this advice with my network of fellow marketers. If your content can't inspire anyone to take action, then it is not doing what it's supposed to.

For more genius content from FakeGrimlock and Fred Willson you can follow them on Twitter @FAKEGRIMLOCK and @AVC..

What's your all time favorite blog post? And why do you think it's so great?

I saw that image on Twitter and couldn't resist deciphering the code. Must Read post. Unique way of emphasizing that people buy and share what they WANT not what they NEED. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to create something buzzworthy they want that is also a necessity. (Key during challenging economies.) But never forget the "pet rock" phenomena. Who can understand that one? It makes me wonder if people in cities have never seen rocks in the wild or paint kits. :-)
