It Takes A Village

It Takes A Village

Are you familiar with the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child”.  In 1996 then First Lady and current presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton wrote It Takes a Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us.  In it, Clinton presents her vision for the children of America. She focuses on the impact individuals and groups outside the family have, for better or worse, on a child's well-being, and advocates a society which meets all of a child's needs.

With the meteoric rise of marketing technology over the past several years doubling in just the last year from 947 vendors to over 1,876 according to Scott Brinker of ChiefMartech.com it got me thinking about the marketing village it takes today for B2B organizations to acquire, nurture and grow new customers aka drive REVENUE!

Sirius Decisions created the model below a few years ago to enable organizations to understand the full spectrum of B2B sales and marketing technologies by dividing it into four main areas; Reputation, Demand, Sales and Operations.  What I affectionately refer to as the marketing village.

When you look at this graphic what do you think?  Do you say to yourself OMG…wow!  Do your eyes glaze over or do say no problem have we have it covered in my organization?

What I see is for a modern marketing organization it takes a team of both left and right brain marketers to be successful today.  Just as we all learned in Marketing 101 I believe you need a balanced approach of both to be effective.  The right brain creative folks to create and tell the story and the left brain “data scientist” marketer who can analyze the plethora of data marketing technology platforms are able to deliver to us.

So who’s on your team? Does your village have the right mix to support this growing sales & marketing ecosystem?   Let me know. Love to hear your thoughts, challenges and successes.

For sure Mike but there are many single parents unfortunately today for different reasons who have had to take on the responsibility themselves and doing a fantastic job.

All good points Robbie! The wheel credit goes to Sirius Decisions. Can't take credit for that one. They have some of the best sales and marketing models and frameworks I've seen. Understand they're unveiling 18 new models at their Summit next month.

Love the "wheel", would like to see an extension, showing new "wheels" around each point/department ... and to make sure that you have Best Team Building Practices, don't forget to have the right leader/s, to keep the wheels spinning and in sync.

"Village visitors" (btw I like that) aka outside consultants and also outsource service providers play a critical role in the ecosystem filling the large competency gap you so rightly point out. I couldn't agree with you more Kelly. You and your MarketBridge colleagues are some of the best!
