Be a KM Champion!

Be a KM Champion!

All your life you knew you were different. You knew we could work smarter, faster, stronger. Some day, you thought, you would change things for the better.

That day is today. Here's how to influence your organization to work smarter.

1. Stay informed.

Educate yourself. Read about Knowledge Management. Beyond books and articles, there are innumerable blogs, and a few worthwhile listservs. A search will turn up more than you could ever digest. Joint Linkedin groups. And even if you can't go to annual conferences, you can check out the writings and speeches of presenters. That's easy using social media.

2. Network.

As a KM Champion, you are a useful link in the knowledge value chain. You are a "knowledge broker," linking your teammates with other people and valuable knowledge resources elsewhere. These can be KM resources, or subject matter content. Be a "share-a-holic!"

3. Speak up.

When you advocate for KM, you become a valuable touchpoint. Every time you speak up for collaboration, you nudge the organization in a useful direction.

Think about it: You are changing the culture every time you speak up.

As you talk up the principles of knowledge management, you become a reference point for KM. Soon, people will come to you with questions.

You will graduate from being a "KM Champion" to "KM Thought Leader."

After struggling for 35 years in the workforce, I’ve come to the conclusion that KM is the key to a successful organization. But like the Holy Grail and Theory of Everything, a successful KM strategy seems to be elusive, almost mythical. And most of the literature I’ve found online seems to forget what I consider to be the primary goal of KM, which is to resolve these three problems that plague me on a daily basis: 1. I cannot find what I’m looking for. 2. When I do find what I’m looking for, I don’t know if it’s current 3. I end up recreating whatever it is I can’t find (which in turn may or may not be current – I become part of the problem, not the solution).

I have been doing this since I joined my current organisation Neil Olonoff, but boy how much you need patience, conviction and courage to keep it going! Except maybe if you sit at the Board.
