Wanted: 600 Million New Jobs

Wanted: 600 Million New Jobs

I have a favor to ask. Stop what you’re doing, and go here.

It takes just a few seconds to give both the jobless and the job creators of the world a voice in a very important global debate happening now.

In September, the United Nations will meet to determine the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – the world’s ‘to do’ list, if you will, for the next 15 years. It’s critical that entrepreneurs and the jobs they create make the cut. And here’s why.

In the next decade, we need 600 million new jobs to employ a rapidly growing global workforce. Where will the jobs come from? Contrary to popular belief, it won’t be big, global corporations like Dell. It will be entrepreneurs and their fast-growing startups and small businesses.

We know this because, today, entrepreneurs create 70 percent of all new jobs in the world; up to 90 percent in some emerging economies. We simply won’t be able to scale without a healthy pipeline of startups and thriving small businesses.

Imagine what’s possible if we removed the barriers that prevent entrepreneurs from turning their ideas into thriving businesses. More and better jobs. Breakthrough innovations that change the world. But perhaps the biggest benefit of all is hope; because, wherever you are in the world, jobs and economic opportunity bring hope for a better future.

That was my message today as I joined United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, elected officials, humanitarians, business leaders and entrepreneurs in San Francisco for the UN’s 70th anniversary. We had thoughtful discussions about the SDGs and our respective roles in leading the change we want to see in the world by 2030.

#EntrepreneursUNite is one way I hope to influence change. It’s a global petition to rally support for Goal 8 – the SDG currently under consideration that focuses on entrepreneurs, sustainable economic growth, and full and productive employment for all. We’re collecting signatures until September; then we’ll hand them over to UN leaders to show global support for Goal 8.

Please join me for this once-in-a-generation opportunity to set the world’s agenda. Sign our petition to tell the world that economic opportunity, jobs and hope for a better future matter to you. Thank you!
