4 Pop Star Reflections for Small Business Success

4 Pop Star Reflections for Small Business Success

Last night I was 1 of 45,000 [multi-generational] screaming fans at Taylor Swift’s [SOLD OUT] 1989 World Tour at Nationals Stadium in Washington, DC.  I have a confession to make though.  I didn’t enter the stadium as a “fan”.  As a matter of fact, I wasn’t all that excited about dropping that kind of cash for my daughter and I to attend.  BUT, about 30 minutes into T-Swizzle’s performance (yeah, that’s how I roll with her now :)), my interest and perspective dramatically shifted leading me to sharing these “4 Pop Star Reflections for Small Business Success”:

  1. Give Your Customers More Than What’s Expected : After sitting through more than 2 hours of opening acts, I [like many of the attendees] figured we’d get a whopping 60 minutes of Taylor Swift. But, about 2 hours into her countless wardrobe changing, 45,000 synchronized, glowing wrist band performance, Taylor’s energy level climbed higher.  Even the more senior attendees [I told you this was a multi-generational concert] got a 2nd wind and were back on their feet chanting their newly learned lyrics.  Reflection: Do more for your clients and watch their reaction.  Your enthusiasm is contagious!
  2. Acknowledge Others : Throughout Taylor’s performance, she spoke about the importance of surrounding herself with the “right” people; those who genuinely liked her and enjoyed spending time with her. Naturally, she attributed her success to those associations - her team, friends and fans. Her infectious smile reflected her gratefulness.  Reflection: Sustaining long term success is a team sport. Always take time to publicly thank others and to recognize their contribution toward your success. No [wo]man is an island.
  3. Make the Experience Memorable : Tickets for Taylor Swift’s sold-out performance - $$$$. Adjusting afternoon work schedule to accommodate a trip to Nationals Stadium - $$$. Stadium food - $$. Experiencing the joy of tens of thousands roaring fans (among them, your daughter) - PRICELESS. Reflection: In the words of the late, great Maya Angelou “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But, people will never forget how you made them feel.”
  4. Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously : Amid last night’s brief downpour, the stage Taylor was performing on malfunctioned; suspending her over the crowd for longer than she anticipated. Her response to the screaming fans? Laughingly, “I don’t know how long I’ll be stuck up here, but we’re gonna have a concert anyway”.  Reflection: When business throws you a curve ball [… and it will] “Shake it Off” … “Shake it Off”!
