Networking for Newbies: How To Build Professional Relationships

It's important to know people in your industry and build relationships. The more people you know, the better, right? But how do you begin to approach professionals? Where do you find them, and once you do, what do you say? I've started to 'up my game' in networking these past few months and wanted to share my tips on professionally socializing (and am accepting any helpful tips you'd like to share as well!).

Networking For Newbies: 4 Ways To Begin Building Professional Relationships

#1 Go To Networking Events

I've been to a few networking events, but this is something I should certainly do more often. Every event you go to won't be a huge success, but it's always a good idea to attend an event and be prepared to build your contact list. Showing up is half the battle, right? Whether you are attending these events to further your career or find a new one, make sure you go to these events prepared with business cards and a clear objective.

How do you find out about networking events? Follow professionals on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, and search for events your connections are hosting or attending. Follow bloggers in your industry for networking events, or do an old fashioned Google search.

P.S Many networking events involve alcohol. Be sure not to over-do it! I would say 1-3 drinks at most, depending on your tolerance. Keep it classy folks.

#2 Reach Out To Your LinkedIn Contacts

This is something I have been testing out recently and have been finding some success. Some of us have hundreds of connections on LinkedIn, and I'm betting you don't know all of them personally. You may be interested in their position, see them as a future client, or you may have simply found them on "People You May Know" and are anxiously awaiting the day your profile says 500+  connections. Don't let these valuable connections go to waste! Reach out to your contacts and ask if they have a few seconds to chat on the phone or meet up in person. Ask them about their position and what their job title entails to see if you could work together in any way, or simply to take the connection a step further. You never know where a simple 'hello' may lead you!

#3 Join Networking Sites

There's tons of networking sites out there such as Eventbrite, Meetup.com, SholdMediaGroup.com,and TenThousandCoffees.com. Join these websites and find out about networking events in your area. I recently made an account on Ten Thousand Coffees (photo shown above) and absolutely love the concept.  The website is full of 'experts' who are willing to meet up, email, Skype or have a conversation over the phone simply to network, offer career advice, or collaborate on passion projects.

#4 Don't Be Afraid To Talk Business

Sometimes the best networking is done when you aren't even trying. I'm not telling you to harass people when you go out to a bar or club on a Friday night, but don't eliminate the topic of business completely. You never know who you will bump into! When meeting new people, ask them about their jobs and get them to elaborate (if the volume of music permits!).

Networking For Newbies: It Ain't So Scary After All

People love talking about themselves. Don't be afraid to approach professionals and ask them more about what they do. You'll be surprised at how open people will be. Everyone knows it isn't an easy task building your career and reputation (especially for a recent grad!) and most people are willing to help or simply sit down and chat about their professional experience.

What networking events have you been to, and how did you find out about these events? I'd love to hear about your experience. If you're hosting a networking event, I'd love to more know about it.

As the author of "Turn Your Business Card Into Business" I am an avid networker. I use LinkedIn to keep track of the people I meet and love tip #2 to be sure to follow up periodically with those on your list just to say hi. That helps to keep you top of mind.

Solid advice! Thank you for the great article. Live networking events can make a huge impact on people's careers. Good tip on not drinking too much! You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.
