What’s behind the latest downtrend in workforce confidence? Overall, U.S. workers’ confidence has dropped by 2 points since the start of the year (on a scale from -100 to +100), according to the latest findings of LinkedIn’s Workforce Confidence survey. Confidence is also down year-over-year among workers when it comes to their outlook on finding a job or keeping their current one (-4 points since March 2023), and their outlook on progressing in their careers this year (-3 points since March 2023). It’s typical for active job seekers to be less confident about getting and holding a job compared to the average U.S. worker. This year, that trend is particularly pronounced for unemployed Americans, who saw a spike in confidence to get and hold a job in January (+12) that has since dwindled to -2. Last year closed on a low note for the average U.S. worker’s jobs confidence, with a confidence score down 4 points from 2023’s peaks. Sentiments usually rise at the start of the new year, but that bump hasn’t held steady or overcome last year’s downtrend. Current confidence scores could be reflecting a leveling out of sentiments after that new year’s optimism, as well as pessimism about inflation and ongoing layoffs. Do these findings line up with what you’re seeing and hearing? Weigh in below. ✍️: Rachel Cromidas 📊: Allie Lewis, Bud Rashidian

If you could redefine the word “success” in the dictionary, what would you write? ✍ Founding Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence Marc Brackett says success should be redefined as “having the skills to deal with the full range of emotions that we experience in life.” We ask each other how we feel all the time yet, "Do we really care?" Brackett asks. "That is rampant in schools and workplaces and homes." Next time you ask someone how they are, really mean it. "Taking time to deal with your own emotions and other people’s emotions is worthwhile," Brackett says. Why and how are companies investing in upskilling their employees in artificial intelligence? We asked talent leaders from three of this year’s Top Companies in the U.S., EY, PwC and Moderna, that exact question. “This is the first time disruptive technology or emerging technology is impacting everyone in the workforce,” says Ginnie Carlier, Americas Vice Chair of Talent at EY. According to PwC’s Chief People Officer Yolanda Seals-Coffield, it’s critical that employees develop skills in these emerging technologies. “We do not want to have professionals whose skills are out of date, whose skills are no longer valuable.” And companies are looking for employees who are eager to upskill in AI capabilities. Moderna’s Chief Human Resources Officer Tracey Franklin says that “part of [Moderna’s] strategy in the recruiting process is to make sure that we’re hiring people who are interested in cutting edge technology and digital.” How can companies equip their employees with critical AI skills? And what advice do you have for employees looking to develop these skills? Tell us in the comments. Has saying “no” to a job actually opened more doors for you? When Jocelyn Bold set out to become a professional photographer, she was a self-proclaimed "yes man," doing shoots for free, figuring the exposure she’d get from the work would make it worthwhile. What she did next changed everything for her life and career. She said “No” to the job and, in an instant, discovered the power of putting a monetary value on your time and skillset.
