Why is it important for employees to have fun at work? Fun is part of personal wellness, says Top Company Fidelity Investments’ Head of Associate Experience Suzanne Howard. “We know that if people are feeling healthy and feeling good about where they work, that will also lead to productive outcomes. It’s really about allowing people to bring their whole self to work.” So how does Fidelity cultivate connectivity for its associates? Opportunities include a barbeque with musical performances from employees called Live Free and Perform, a Mario Kart tournament and special interest groups like book and video game clubs, Howard says. “We know that if we’re taking care of our associates, they’re going to take care of our clients.” What advice do you have for employers looking to implement opportunities for fun into their workplaces? Let us know in the comments. To hear more from this year’s Top Companies, check out the full list here: https://lnkd.in/USTopCompanies24.

You should probably be charging more $$$... Freelance photographer Jocelyn Bold learned this the hard way. She secured a magazine gig, then got a call from the company saying her price was far too low. The company rep told her, “You’re underselling yourself. People respect people who value what they’re presenting to the table.” Bold worked to better understand how to calculate her rates, accounting for things like: ✔️ Equipment ✔️ How long/costly is your commute? ✔️ How long is the shoot? ✔️ Editing after the fact ✔️ Is the equipment heavy? ✔️ Editing software ✔️ Coffee “They approved it immediately. We’re talking like 4x my rent. My life has not been the same since.” Freelancers – How do you calculate your rate? Share your advice in the comments to help others who are just starting out. What’s behind the latest downtrend in workforce confidence? Overall, U.S. workers’ confidence has dropped by 2 points since the start of the year (on a scale from -100 to +100), according to the latest findings of LinkedIn’s Workforce Confidence survey. Confidence is also down year-over-year among workers when it comes to their outlook on finding a job or keeping their current one (-4 points since March 2023), and their outlook on progressing in their careers this year (-3 points since March 2023). It’s typical for active job seekers to be less confident about getting and holding a job compared to the average U.S. worker. This year, that trend is particularly pronounced for unemployed Americans, who saw a spike in confidence to get and hold a job in January (+12) that has since dwindled to -2. Last year closed on a low note for the average U.S. worker’s jobs confidence, with a confidence score down 4 points from 2023’s peaks. Sentiments usually rise at the start of the new year, but that bump hasn’t held steady or overcome last year’s downtrend. Current confidence scores could be reflecting a leveling out of sentiments after that new year’s optimism, as well as pessimism about inflation and ongoing layoffs. Do these findings line up with what you’re seeing and hearing? Weigh in below. ✍️: Rachel Cromidas 📊: Allie Lewis, Bud Rashidian
